Motivation is a popular topic, but motivation for women? It usually doesn’t get quite that specific. If you need more female-specific motivational tactics in your life, I’ve got 20 ways to start gently kick your butt into high gear…
- WHY SO SLEEPY?
Everyone needs sleep, but Wonder Women like us need seriously-sound rest.
After nights you don’t sleep well (or very much)…it feels like everyone, everywhere IS YELLING. When your sleep is off, your work, family, and friends are the people who really suffer–all because you woke up lagging and crabby. Get your rest. Rock your hustle. Enjoy your world (and give them someone to enjoy too).
- We’re bringing bedtimes back.
Nobody wants to say it…but bedtimes are actually super useful. When you set (and embrace) a time for your day to truly, officially end–you will work harder tomorrow. Bedtimes are an incentive to get your work done when you actually have energy and opportunity–and they help you settle into some raw, unfiltered sleep when the time comes!Nobody wants to say it...but bedtimes are actually super useful.Click To Tweet
- Wake up WAY earlier (AKA Make Morning MAGIC)
My magical time is 4:30am. When all the world’s asleep, before the garbage men arrive and the sirens start to wail–the birds and I begin our our day. It’s an incredibly peaceful way to wake up, and my very best work happens on days I begin before the world starts to spin. What time’s magical for you? Don’t have one? I’ll see you at 4:30am–sharp.
- White Noise Patrol
If you’re a light sleeper (or a noisy neighborhood liver)–a White Noise Machine is a must. It’s one of those things that sounds like it could be a little bogus…until you try it and sleep like a feather tucked into a hammock cloud. It blocks out those slamming car doors echoing from down the street, your Snoring Spouse, and even those endless thoughts racing through your mind. I use a Marpac (The Original Sleep Machine)…so vintage, so worth it.If you’re a light sleeper (or a noisy neighborhood liver)–a White Noise Machine is a must.Click To Tweet
- Throw Some Shade…with Blackout Curtains
There’s a time for sunshine–day. And a time to blackout the bedroom–every time you sleep, nap, or have a migraine. Stop letting the little winks of streetlights and daybreak wake you up before you’re ready. Blackout Shades are a must for any bedroom with windows!
- Phoneless Bedrooms
Your dreams don’t need notifications–they’ve got enough going on already. Here’s the Two Step Process you can follow to de-phone your bedroom (and get back to all that sleep and stuff).
Step One: charge phone in kitchen.
Step Two: sleep sounder than a Baby Kangaroo.
- Pick a New Way To Start Your Day
And by new–I mean stop checking Facebook and Email before even wiping the sleep from your eyes. You’re not awake enough (yet) to get into that kind of stuff–and you shouldn’t until you’re fully awake, fully energized, and fully zenned-out. Replace starting your day with stress and social media…with something productive and happy. It will change everything.
- Lay off the Email
Email and Facebook are two of the most checked mobile apps of all time. I check mine 2x daily because it’s ridiculous to check any more than that. I’ve mentioned this before (but it SO opened my eyes)–my millionaire mentor once asked me how many times I check my mailbox a day…I said Once (if that). And it clicked–I should treat my email the same!
- GET a Millionaire Mentor
Okay they don’t have to be a millionaire, but it helps AND sounds cool. Your mentor should be someone lightyears ahead of you in business–so that immediately eliminates all of your competitors or peers. You need someone who’s been so far down the rabbit hole, they can actually show you real-word-ways to grow, scale, and expand your business (like RIGHT NOW).Your mentor should be someone lightyears ahead of you in business.Click To Tweet
- Join a Mastermind
Join a mastermind and surround yourself with likeminded, nerdily ambitious entrepreneurs…just like you. Or start your own group if you can’t find one. I did both of these options this year, and each effort has proven super fruitful. I have made some close new friends, learned WAY more than I could figure out on my own (in a short amount of time), and they push me to get better.
- Get an Accountability Buddy
So the two masterminds weren’t enough for you–or you’re a Lone Rangerette. Whatever the case may be, everyone can benefit from an accountability buddy. When you remove the group pressure, and just work 1:1 with someone you can trust–things tend to get a lot more honest, upfront, and unfiltered. It’s a no-nonsense way to stop twiddling your thumbs and start tripling your funds. I meet with mine 1x weekly on Mondays–and we’re only locked in for 90 day spurts (so the commitment doesn’t overwhelm your year). It will be a short term production BOOST at the very, very least.
- Make a list of everything that’s stressing you out.
Now light it on fire…just kidding. Delegate it on fire! It will free up your time and energy–and when work gets done without you having to walk people through every single step…it feels so good. It’s confirmation that you’ve built a team you can count on–and as you grow bigger and bolder, delegation is going to become a HUGE part of your life. Get used to it now!
- Listen to the TOP Podcasts
I like to take a little time each day to listen to my top podcasts. It pumps me up, I learn something, and it’s a good way to keep current with the always changing modern business world.
- Entrepreneur On Fire
- StartUp Nation
- Tim Ferriss
- As Told By Nomads
…just to name a few! And if you’re tired of the biz advice, just listen to whatever speaker gets you energized. The point of this is to interact with the outside world a little bit, listen thoughtfully to what others are saying, and see how that perspective alters your day.
- Look at the space you’re working in right now and…
Turn it into the most cozy money making sanctuary EVER. If you’re hustling, bustling, and straight-up rocking your days in the office…then why can’t that place be comfortable? We’re ladies. We can have nice things (and do whatever we want). My office is so comfortable–not only am I prepared for any blindside (migraine, back spasm, pregnant nap), but even my little girls love coming up here at night when Mommy and Daddy have to work a bit in the evening.
- Give yourself breaks throughout the day
Your day doesn’t have to be a non-stop marathon. Sometimes you can rest…like 5 minutes here, 10 minutes there. If you feel your brain, eyes, or soul tiring out–just give them a break! I talk Muse Walks (meditation walks), use my Pomodoro to schedule regular hourly interludes, and sometimes I just lie down on the floor to clear my mind (or figure something big out). Don’t feel guilty when you have to catch your breath–that’s just proof you’re kicking some booty.
- Work outside. Walk. Sit in the sun.
Some of my days are spent working entirely outside. In Kansas–this isn’t feasible everyday, but some days are just too beautiful to deny myself the sunshine. If you’ve got some stellar weather in your hometown…stop looking out the window, waiting for the weekend, or punishing yourself from nice days outside! Just go sit on a bench with your laptop. Get some sun. Take your kid to the park. If you think you need the fresh air…you’re probably right!Just go sit on a bench with your laptop. Get some sun. Take your kid to the park. - Check in With Your Team
When you check in with your team, stuff gets done. It’s that simple. Check in, see what’s delayed, figure out why, absolutely admit it if it’s your fault, and get everyone back on the same page (YOURSELF included). Just make sure you show the team that you’re accountable too. Everyone appreciates honesty. Every team respects it.
Don’t work on the weekend (or at night).
This goes double-seven-fold if you have children…the night should be spent with them! They’re in school ALL day (and at activities all evening)–so you better save your nights and weekends for bedtime stories and kisses on the forehead. Trust me, you’ll get more energy, joy, and value out of it than an extra hour at the office.
- Work Out
And by work out, I just mean go do something physical. Get your heart rate pumping. It doesn’t have to be a 3-Hour Crossfit Blast (but mad-props if it is). Find some time (I like the morning because it wakes me UP for the rest of the day)–and stop making excuses. It’s as simple as going for a 30 minute walk, taking a dip in the neighborhood pool, nighttime hot yoga, or (my favorite advice)–JUST STRETCH. You can do it in bed…on the floor next to a fan…in front of the TV…literally anywhere you want! Maybe you aren’t anywhere near ready to pump some iron or run a marathon–then take the first (teeny-tiny-necessary) step…stretch!
- Mix it up.
Mix things up (if you don’t do well with a routine, design a routine THAT CHANGES).
If you don’t do well with routine…design a routine that changes–MIX IT UP! You don’t have to do the same stuff…at the time times and days…week in and week out. That’s madness. Develop a schedule with options–one exercise is to list out your weekly recurring events (and their due days)–and just make sure they’re checked off before that due date. Myself? I rotate my exercises, my BIG Sales Call days, and team meetings. It’s a relief–and I never start to dread a single day of the week…
- Eat Better
There are so many diets and weird things you can do to start eating better, healthier, -whatev-ier. It’s most likely different for every person out there. The simple, realistic things I KNOW help…
- Lower your sugar intake (like A LOT)
- Kick the caffeine dependency
- Eat low glycemic
- Try a ketogenic diet
You know when you get all loopy and tired and cross-wired? Go eat. At the very, very, very least–just make sure you’re eating and drinking water throughout the day. Once you’ve got that down ^ try some of these cool, healthy approaches out (one might just stick).
Aww 🙁 that’s the end.
